A working version of a piece of writing, expected to be revised through multiple passes before final.
Among Merriam-Webster’s many senses of draft, the relevant one is 5c: “a preliminary sketch, outline, or version”. The word is first recorded in the thirteenth century. The definition’s own word, preliminary, is the useful one: a draft is defined by being expected to change.
Merriam-Webster is cited as the dictionary of record: where an entry defines a word rather than a position, a dictionary is the primary source for it. How the term is used in research writing, above, is this lexicon’s own reading.
