The European Union area in which goods, services, capital, and people move freely without internal border controls.
The EU’s own formulation is the four freedoms in one sentence: it “ensures free movement of goods, services, capital and persons in a single EU internal market”, with the aim that citizens can “study, live, shop, work and retire in any EU country and enjoy products from all over Europe”. The mechanism is described as removing “technical, legal and bureaucratic barriers”. What makes the official page worth citing rather than a textbook is that it also names what is not finished. The EU lists as remaining barriers its fragmented national tax systems, separate national markets for financial services, energy and transport, varied e-commerce rules and practices between member states, and complicated rules on recognising vocational qualifications. Two further projects sit alongside the single market rather than inside it: the capital markets union, and the digital single market.

This entry is sourced to the European institution that runs the thing described, which is the right authority for what it is and how it works — and the wrong one for whether it works well. Official pages state purposes and publish their own figures. Read them for mechanism, scope and legal basis; look elsewhere for evaluation.
