FSSC describes its scheme as “a complete Certification Scheme for Food Safety Management Systems aligned with the ISO Management System approach and the ISO Harmonized Structure”, built on “international and independent standards such as ISO 22000”, plus “the ISO 22002 series for sector-specific Pre-requisite Programs (PRPs)” and the scheme’s own additional requirements. FSSC also states that the scheme “is recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI)”. That three-layer structure — ISO 22000 for the management system, ISO 22002 for the prerequisites, FSSC’s own requirements on top — is exactly what distinguishes it from plain ISO 22000 certification.
