International automotive quality management system standard — required by automotive OEMs for their suppliers.
Published by the International Automotive Task Force in 2016, IATF 16949:2016 is described by the IATF as a first-edition document “given the strong orientation to the customer, with inclusion of a number of consolidated previous customer specific requirements”. It is not a stand-alone quality standard: the IATF “maintains strong cooperation with ISO by continuing liaison committee status ensuring continued alignment with ISO 9001”, so a supplier is certified to IATF 16949 alongside ISO 9001, not instead of it. For an auto-component exporter that pairing is the entry ticket.
