Merriam-Webster: “an act of revising”, “a result of revising: alteration”, and “a revised version”. First recorded 1611. The dictionary defines revising broadly; the distinction this entry draws — revision as re-examining argument and structure, separate from and before editing and proofreading — is a teaching convention, and is the lexicon’s, not the dictionary’s.
