Merriam-Webster: “a summary outline of a discourse, treatise, or course of study or of examination requirements”. The etymology is unusual, and the dictionary records it plainly: a Late Latin alteration of Latin sillybus, a book label, from Greek sillybos. The word, in other words, descends from a variant form rather than a straight inheritance. Both plurals are current — syllabi and syllabuses. First recorded circa 1656.
Merriam-Webster is cited as the dictionary of record: where an entry defines a word rather than a position, a dictionary is the primary source for it. How the term is used in research writing, above, is this lexicon’s own reading.
