A written word-for-word record of spoken material (interviews, recordings), used as raw data for coding and analysis.
Merriam-Webster: “a written, printed, or typed copy; especially: a usually typed copy of dictated or recorded material”. It also records the official-record sense — “an official copy of a student’s educational record” — and a molecular-biology one, an RNA sequence produced by transcription. First recorded in the fifteenth century. In a methods section the first sense is meant; in an admissions context, the second.
Merriam-Webster is cited as the dictionary of record: where an entry defines a word rather than a position, a dictionary is the primary source for it. How the term is used in research writing, above, is this lexicon’s own reading.
