Merriam-Webster records the surveying sense — “the measurement of the elements necessary to determine the network of triangles into which any part of the earth’s surface is divided in surveying”, or any trigonometric operation locating a position from bearings taken at two known points — and a political sense, “presenting oneself as being above partisan politics”. First recorded 1818.
A discrepancy worth stating rather than hiding. The dictionary does not record the research sense this entry defines — corroborating a finding across several sources, methods, theories or investigators. That usage is a methodological borrowing from surveying, and the borrowing is apt: a position fixed from two bearings is more trustworthy than one guessed from a single sighting. But the citation above sources the word, not the method, and this entry will cite a methods source for the technical sense when one has been read.
