Build the budget where you will spend it, then convert once. Enter the daily spend and the one-off costs in the destination currency, add a buffer, and give the exchange rate you are working with — the estate’s market page is a reference starting point. No rate is fetched or embedded, and what your card or the cash desk actually gives you will differ from any mid-market figure.

The arithmetic, in order

• On-the-ground total = daily spend × days + one-off costs, in the destination currency
• With buffer = that × (1 + buffer %)
• In your home currency = the buffered destination total ÷ the rate you entered
• Trip total = home-currency amount + costs already paid at home
• Per day = the buffered destination total ÷ days, shown in both currencies

Honest limits

• The rate is yours and it will move. Nothing is fetched here. A rate you look up today is not the rate you will be given, and on a long trip it can drift several percent either way.
• What you are quoted is not what you get. Cards, ATMs and cash desks each add a spread on top of the mid-market rate, and dynamic currency conversion at the terminal is usually the worst of the options offered. • No cash-versus-card strategy is offered. The shell this page replaced promised one, along with multi-currency card comparison. That needs live provider data which changes constantly, so it is not attempted rather than faked.
• The buffer is the most useful field here. Trip budgets fail on the unplanned — a missed connection, a medical visit, a day that ran long — not on the daily average being slightly wrong.

No rate source is called and none is mirrored: the exchange rate in the calculation is the one you typed. For a reference mid-market rate to start from, the estate’s market page is the internal pointer; take it fresh on the day you plan, and expect the rate you are actually given to be worse.
