Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs — India's apex customs authority administering customs duty, GST, and customs procedures.
The board exists under the Central Boards of Revenue Act, 1963 — Act 54 of 1963, Ministry of Finance — “An Act to provide for the constitution of separate Boards of Revenue for Direct Taxes and for Excise and Customs and to amend certain enactments for the purpose of conferring powers and imposing duties on the said Boards.” The 1963 split is why India has two revenue boards rather than one, and why customs and indirect taxes sit together in the same body — today the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs.
The Act’s long title only; no section is quoted, and the board has been renamed since 1963.
