Directorate General of Foreign Trade — India's primary export-import policy body issuing IEC and administering FTP schemes.
The Directorate General of Foreign Trade exists under the Foreign Trade (Development and Regulation) Act, 1992 — Act 22 of 1992, administered by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The Act’s stated purpose is “to provide for the development and regulation of foreign trade by facilitating imports into, and augmenting exports from, India and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.” That sentence explains the shape of everything the DGFT does: its authority over the Foreign Trade Policy, over import and export authorisations and over the Importer-Exporter Code all descend from a statute whose object is regulating trade in both directions, not promoting exports alone.
India Code publishes the Act itself, which is a stronger source here than an institutional “about us” page: a website describes a body, an Act constitutes it. What is quoted above is the Act’s long title — the purpose Parliament gave it — and nothing more. No section of any Act is quoted or cited on this page, because India Code’s section-level pages did not serve readable text; procedural detail, eligibility and thresholds are in the Act and its rules, not here.
