Indian government initiative to encourage foreign and domestic companies to manufacture in India.
The initiative’s own account describes it as “a comprehensive and unprecedented overhaul of outdated processes and policies” and “a complete change of the government’s mindset – a shift from issuing authority to business partner”, launched in September 2014 by the Prime Minister. Its stated aims include making India a global design and manufacturing hub, raising manufacturing to 25% of GDP by 2020, opening key sectors to foreign direct investment, and building skills and infrastructure.
This is the initiative’s own description of itself, including its own target and target year — cited as a stated objective, not as an outcome. Whether the 25% share was reached is a separate question this entry does not answer.
